View RecordsCheck an online marriage-license entry against its jurisdiction and document label before treating it as proof that a marriage was recorded.
To check a marriage license online, first identify the issuing jurisdiction and what the displayed record represents. A license, a marriage certificate and an index entry are not interchangeable; a license entry alone should not be used as proof that a ceremony occurred.
Clarify the document form before choosing an ordering route. An index can help locate an event without being the final document.
Use place and time to narrow the issuing office. The event jurisdiction determines which office is likely to hold the record.

Use the parties’ event-era names, likely issuing county and date range. Check the portal’s collection and document label, then compare the identifiers before accepting a match. If there is an image, read it rather than relying only on the index heading. If there is only an order button, the site has not necessarily displayed the underlying record.
Clark County, Nevada distinguishes the original Marriage License Affidavit from proof of marriage and has different request rules for an unredacted affidavit. Its guidance permits online ordering of most marriage records but not that unredacted original through the normal online system. Follow your own custodian’s instructions; this example does not establish universal public access.
If you need official proof, ask the recipient whether a certified marriage certificate is required and request the correct document from its custodian. If the index is incomplete or ambiguous, ask the office about coverage and a record search. Do not infer present marital status from a single license lookup.

CDC/NCHS directs users to the state or local office where the vital event occurred and states the federal government does not distribute identifying vital-record certificates or indexes.
